Fic Rec #49

Why yes, it is a fic rec, thank you for asking. I actually feel a little awkward posting this so quickly after the class-on-fanfiction clusterfuck, but I'm also not a professor and this is my personal blog. Just... maybe don't leave any comments on the fics if you're not used to it, okay? I'd kind of hate to think I'd accidentally subjected someone to an influx of morons. Not that you guys are morons... yeah, I'm just going to stop while I'm ahead here.

Oneshots/Twoshots

Interruptus
Fandom: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Category: Slash
Rating: Hard R

I can’t usually play video games very well. They all seem to have that damn shaky-cam thing that makes me sick to my stomach, so I really only use my PS3 as a BluRay player, with a few exceptions for games I know I can play. Yeah, I know. But I do like to play games on my phone, because it’s small enough that it doesn’t upset my stomach. Anyway, Capcom released the Phoenix Wright games for iOS so I’ve been playing them in my spare time, and I’ve really enjoyed them. So of course I went to go look for fic (especially for Phoenix/Edgeworth slash)… and I’ve found plenty. In this one, people keep interrupting them at the most awkward times. While this fic isn’t quite to the NC-17 level I’d still consider it pretty NSFW, so keep that in mind.

Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America on Film
Fandom: The Avengers
Category: Indeterminate (see notes)
Rating: PG-13

This story is kind of hard to describe. It’s certainly completely different from any fanfiction I’ve ever read. Parts of it are written like someone’s term paper for a film studies class, some parts of it are in blog excerpts, a good portion of it is like a movie script, and only a very small portion of it is actually anything you might recognize as a fanfiction. Basically, Steve turns 100, so there’s going to be a film festival dedicated to presentations of him in movies. He and Bucky end up watching them… which usually doesn’t end very well. The poor guys end up seeing themselves totally bastardized in the popular imagination, and the unorthodox (well, is anything about fanfiction really orthodox to begin with) format works exceptionally well.

Multi-Chapter Fics

Turnabout Pizzeria
Fandom: Crossover between Five Nights at Freddy’s and Phoenix Wright: Apollo Justice
Category: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 38 posts, sequel in project (possibly dropped sequel)
Notes: The on-screen violence is not particularly graphic, but what is hinted at to have happened in the past is extremely disturbing.

If you want a good creepy story, this is for you. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a survival horror video game, where you are a security guard at a Chuck E. Cheese style pizza parlor overnight, where the robotic mascots turn homicidal at night. I’ll be honest- I’ve never played the game, largely because of my inability to play a lot of video games, but I read a lot about it, and know the basic storyline. In this fic, Apollo and Athena get a job as the security guards and work to discover the truth behind the homicidal robots. What turned the robots into the “kill all humans” type is truly horrifying- I don’t want to give away what happened, but if you’re easily upset I’d give this one a pass.

The Boogeyman’s Lullaby
Fandom: Rise of the Guardians
Category: pre-slash
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 20 chapters, in progress

While the current rating of the story is at PG-13 and there hasn’t been anything really slashy yet, if this story continues on its trajectory it’s very likely that the rating will change and it will become more slash, rather than just pre-slash. Jack is very close to becoming a hikikomori when he receives a weird email that summons something into his room… a very bad-tempered boogeyman.

Oh Holy Shit

Yesterday I turned 23 and I was going to post about my birthday. Until I saw this insane plan to make people comment on fanfiction for a college class, and all of a sudden recounting my boring birthday celebration didn't seem all that important anymore. There is more information on this topic here

And dear god, I'm horrified by this. I'm incredibly relieved that I'm such a shitty writer that I've never gotten on the radar of any of these professor-types. And I'm glad that my most popular fic ever is written under a sock account (which I'm not going to give out here, given the circumstances). And even that is crappy enough that nobody would have ever thought to make it required reading for a college course.

Look, I am a college student. I have been a college student for five years. I am very well familiar with college students. This is one of the worst things these professors could have possibly done to fanfiction writers. College students are, quite often, tone-deaf galoots, and that's putting it politely. Trust me, I could say way more on the subject, but I'm not going to, because I'm going to assume most people know what I'm talking about. Let's just say that Accepted and Animal House were made for a reason. The idea of some of the people I go to school with barging into some poor unsuspecting author's work and leaving the sort of dumbass comments I'd expect from them is making me cringe in my desk chair. And I'm not even a well-known writer! I have like five people that regularly read this blog, maybe a few more for my old fic, and most people who know me in real life don't know I read/write fic. I've been careful to keep my two lives separate, partially out of fear of something like this happening! Well, okay, maybe not this happening, because in what universe is fanfiction considered an appropriate topic for a college class? Some of the stuff that's required reading for this class is explicit slash fic, or explicit incest fic. I would assume that would get the professor reprimanded at the very least, but maybe not. After all we're supposed to be adults...

Good lord, it's like all of my nightmares came true at once, and I'm not even involved! I can only imagine that it is much worse for the writers involved.

Fic Rec #48

It’s short, I know, but be glad you’re getting this rec… my doctors have been yelling at me to spend less time lurking around, and with the back problems I have been having I’ve been reading a lot less fic, because for a while it was too painful to sit up. But I missed a month not too long ago and I really don’t want to make a habit of it, so here you go.

Oh, and before I forget, even though it’s the end of January already, happy new year!

Road to Nowhere
Fandom: Thor
Category: Gen
Rating: PG-13

Loki gets the idea to go and get Frigga from Valhalla, and he talks Thor into going with him. It turns into a very dangerous, argument-fraught intergalactic road trip. While the premise sounds pretty cracky, it’s actually surprisingly serious and moving. Frigga being all irritated with her sons when they show up in Valhalla is the best part of the whole thing.

Priorities
Fandom: Vocaloid
Category: Het
Rating: PG

Vocaloid fic can be very confusing, especially if you’re fairly new to the fandom. The characters generally don’t have an established personality, so it can vary widely from fic to fic, and a lot of authors don’t really explain the situation very well, forgetting that not everyone has their own headcanons. This story is an exception to that- the author very clearly has his or her own ideas, but manages to explain them relatively well, and creates an enjoyable story where Kiyoteru and Iroha get together, despite some misunderstandings in the beginning.

Multi-Chapter Fics

Lady Malfoy
Fandom: Harry Potter
Category: Het, gen
Rating: Low R
Completion Status: 41 chapters, completed
Notes: Graphic violence in some chapters, discussion of an (off-screen) sexual assault, attempted non-con

This story was written quite some time ago, possibly before the final book came out, I can't be sure, so it doesn't really follow canon all that well. Basically, Rodolphus Lestrange is alive and pissed off, and he wants revenge on Hermione (who killed Bellatrix in this version of events), so Hermione is sent to live with Draco Malfoy for protection. Among other things, she discovers a complicated situation involving a homicidal ghost haunting Malfoy Manor, Bellatrix Lestrange's son, and a serious illness that Draco has contracted. Please pay attention to the notes on this- while the story itself never gets too detailed some of the story's major plotlines may be very upsetting for some readers, and in some ways the lack of details make it worse. The ghost's storyline especially is really depressing, and only gets more so when it connects up with the rest of the plot.

Fic Rec #47: The Lawn's Fourth Annual Christmas Fic Rec!

Yes, it's that time of year again. And to be honest, this year's almost didn't happen. It's been a bad few months for me and reading Christmassy stuff just wasn't something I was in the mood for. Usually I start looking for Christmas fics in September or October... this year I didn't do it until Thanksgiving, but I still think it came out okay, even if it’s kind of short and there’s no multi-chapter fics this year.

Have Yourself a Merry NORAD Christmas
Fandom: Hetalia
Category: Gen
Rating: G

Every year, since the 1950s, America and Canada give Santa an escort over their territories in fighter jets. This is loosely (very loosely) based on a true story- in the 1950s, a department store tried to set up a telephone line where kids could call and talk to Santa Claus, but they made a typo and instead printed the phone number for the US Air Defense Command Center (the precursor to NORAD). None of the NORAD people wanted to break children's dreams, so they decided to tell kids where Santa's sleigh was. This still happens today, and it makes for a really cute fic.

In Her Place
Fandom: Harry Potter
Category: Gen
Rating: PG-13

Ok, this is really only a Christmas fic in the most technical sense- it takes place at Christmas and it’s not really the most holiday-ish premise. Basically, over the holidays, Draco Malfoy has the best idea ever- he is going to use Polyjuice potion to figure out what the Gryffindor Quidditch team strategy is and accidentally ends up going undercover as Hermione. He finds out that life as Hermione is pretty difficult… bitchy roommates, creepy perverts with mistletoe, and high heels are the least of his problems. This is a pretty funny story, although oddly enough the site will ask you to confirm that you’re 18+ to access this story even though it’s PG-13, and barely at that.

All I Want For Christmas Is…
Fandom: Free!
Category: Gen
Rating: G

Based on the scene in Episode 10 where Mini-Sousuke and Mini-Gou hold a Christmas party for Mini-Rin with the flu. Just a cute, sweet story about kids wanting to cheer up their sick friend by throwing a party.

Fic Rec #46

Yeah, yeah, I know, it's a month late. But in all honesty, I wasn't in a good place last month and the idea of reading too much fic was just so unappealing to me. Hopefully this makes up for it. I’m also posting it a bit early because I’m going out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday and may not have Internet access until December, so I figured I’d get this out of the way now.

Moloch’s Self-Improvement Project
Fandom: Sleepy Hollow
Category: Gen
Rating: PG

Moloch finds a book about increasing productivity in your workplace and decides to implement a few of its suggestions in purgatory. The results are absolutely hilarious. Who knew the Lord of Darkness could actually be funny? Just a goofy crack fic.

Non-Critical Malfunction
Fandom: Captain America 2
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult
Notes: non-con

How to explain this one… well, you know the Winter Soldier is supposed to be a weapon, right? If something goes wrong with him, then it makes sense he would have to report to Hydra equipment facility to get worked on. But… what if something normal for humans happens to him, and he doesn’t understand, so the technician takes advantage of it? I have to say, this story is extremely well-written, to the point where it’s very uncomfortable to read. If you’re looking for something sexy to read, you might want to give this one a miss, but if you want very visceral psychological mindfuck this is great.

Meet You Halfway
Fandom: Free!
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult

Uh… I don’t really know how to describe this one, so I’m just going to cut/paste the summary of the fic itself: Rin has a microdick and is slightly self-conscious about it…but Nitori likes it. The two of them are still ridiculous romantics through and through, though. (Nitorin)

Da Capo
Fandom: Free!
Category: Slash
Rating: R
Notes: Infidelity, dubious consent

A very disturbing fic where Haru finds himself stuck in a time loop. Every time he sleeps with Rin, his life resets itself back to him being 17 years old. It’s not like Groundhog Day, where he gets reset every day- it depends on when he has sex with Rin. I don’t want to give away too much, but this story is incredibly unsettling in its implications and really well-written.

This fic is kind of strange. It is loosely based on events that happened in the lead-up to WWII in Britain, only in space and with Vulcans. Parts of it are very reminiscent of the movie the King’s Speech. Kirk meets someone online, who turns out to be the grieving Prince of the Vulcan Empire. They get married, and royal intrigue happens, as well as one of the most disturbing OC villains I’ve ever come across- a very creepy Vulcan prostitute who finagled her way into positions of

Fic Rec #45

Fear not, my friends, we have a more normal length rec this month. It was useful actually having steady Internet access and hours between classes with nothing to do. I also went on kind of a crossover kick for a bit, so there’s a fair few of Harry Potter/Avengers crossovers on here- so if that’s your thing, enjoy! If not, well, you know me, just wait until next month and there will be different stories.

Third Definition
Fandom: Free
Category: Gen
Rating: High PG-13

I wasn't sure if I was going to rec this one, because while it had me screaming with laughter (so much so that my brother came in to make sure I was okay), it also hit my second-hand embarassment squick incredibly hard. But ultimately the hilarity won out over my second-hand embarassment, so here you go. Haru overhears his classmates talking about an interesting movie involving something called watersports. So he asks to borrow it and he and the rest of the team watches it. Everyone learns that sometimes words have more than one definition... Oh, and a word to the wise, if you don't know the other definitions for that word, I'd check out Urban Dictionary before reading the fic or you might get the shock of your life just like everyone in the story did. And no, I'm not your mom, I'm not going to tell you either.

DEAD END
Fandom: Vocaloid
Category: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Notes: Character death

In my experience a lot of Vocaloid fic is complete crap. This one, though, managed to shake me to the core and reminded me of a lot of Tron fic. When you get down to it, really, Vocaloids, like the programs from Tron, are still computer programs, and are vulnerable to things like code corruption, viruses, and, as this story demonstrates, being uninstalled. If you’ve ever wondered what would go through a computer program’s mind when you deleted it, wonder no more, this fic explains it all, in a very viscerally disturbing way. Obviously a sentient computer program would view being uninstalled as murder…

You Are the Heroine to My Protagonist
Fandom: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Category: Slash
Rating: Hard R

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun is an anime about a girl who falls in love with a guy in her class and tries to confess her feelings, but he misinterprets her and thinks she’s trying to tell him that she likes the manga he draws. And he draws romantic girl’s comics. At least, that’s technically what it’s about. There’s a whole lot of other characters, too- the lesbian that half the school is in love with, the derpy manga editor, and this guy- Mikoshiba Mikoto, who tries to act so cool but instead is a giant dork. He actually is the inspiration for the main character in Nozaki’s manga, so it only stands to follow that Nozaki actually has some feelings for him, right?

Multi-Chapter Fics

Child of the Storm
Fandom: Crossover between Harry Potter and the Avengers
Category: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 57 chapters, in progress
Notes: Graphic violence, and I do mean graphic in some chapters, honestly it really pushes the limits of the PG-13 rating but since it's not throughout the whole thing I'm going to leave it.

This was another tough one to decide if I was actually going to rec it or not. While it's an incredibly captivating story (and long as hell, it took me almost this whole month to read), the premise of the story is kind of out there (Thor turns out to be Harry's biological father- it's complicated) and the author has kind of an annoying tendency to turn characters into mouthpieces for his pet social issues especially in the later chapters, I ended up enjoying the story enough overall to want to find out what happens next and give my blog's readers the chance to read it themselves. But I also want to warn you that while the story itself is rated PG-13, it does get very graphically violent in some chapters- chapter 21 in particular is enough to make me somewhat sick to my stomach.

My Name Is Yasha Romanov
Fandom: Crossover between Harry Potter and the Avengers
Category: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 8 chapters, in progress

Due to a prior run-in, Sirius Black knew the Black Widow. After the murder of his friends the Potters, he takes their surviving son and gives him to Natasha Romanov to look after. Meeting the Prince
Fandom: Free!
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult
Completion Status: 4 chapters, possibly completed
Notes: Dubious consent

When Sousuke invades a neighboring country, he takes a liking to the handsome prince. Deciding that since he invaded the country, he had the right to take Prince Rin as his personal property. Chapters are short, but smutty, and you definitely get the sense of what’s going on- Sousuke’s snarky, sort of evil behavior and Rin’s doomed attempts to reassert his power. And lots of sex. Don’t forget that.

At the annual Samezuka maid cafe, Momo sticks his foot in his mouth by calling Nitori feminine while complaining about having to wear a maid dress. So he decides to make it up to his sempai by trying to become the best maid he can be. And yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. You don't see too many fics where Nitori tops, and this one happens to be scorching hot as well.

Ghost in the Wires
Fandom: The Avengers
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult
Notes: Contains random characters from a bunch of other fandoms, including Star Trek, but knowledge of these guys isn't necessary to read this story, also, probably more importantly, character death

In a world where Tony Stark did not survive being held captive by the terrorists, Pepper Potts donates his old mansion to the Avengers, after they save the world from being taken over by Loki. And then, he meets a strange computer program, a subroutine of JARVIS, named for its deceased creator, Anthony. Little by little, he starts falling in love with program, never mind that Anthony is one, a computer, and b, based on a dead guy. This story is also really freaking long, clocking in at almost 50,000 words. I actually forgot it wasn't a multi-chapter until I went back to get the link for it. It's also important to note that while I put the highest rating possible in for this story, it's not that highly rated until the last sixth or so of the story. Up until then, it's pretty much PG-13.

I'll admit I was kind of hesitant to read this one in the first place, because the author warned in the summary that it was pretty angsty. I'm not always in the proper place to read something like that, but I gave it a shot anyway, and despite the author's warning, it's not all angst all the time. There are funny parts too, although when they do turn on the angst, they turn on the angst. When Makoto is scouted to become a model, Haru and Rin have to face the facts that they're both attracted to him, and deal with the ghosts of their past coming back to haunt them.

Analyzing Mothy
Fandom: The Evillious Chronicles
Category: Gen
Rating: PG

In order for this story to make sense, you at least need to be passably familiar with the Evillious Chronicles, a series of Vocaloid songs. I actually really do recommend them, they’re pretty good, but it is the most convoluted, complicated plot of anything outside of Game of Thrones. In case you’re not familiar with the storyline, Meiko is a psychopathic cannibal, Luka is yandere (and murders four people with scissors), Rin and Len are… a whole lot of characters actually, but at first they’re an evil princess and her twin brother, Miku is… also a lot of people, but is a mass murderer, then a clockwork doll, Gumi is the devil, Kaito is a corrupt judge, and Gakupo is a serial rapist. Oh yeah, Kiyoteru is a mob boss and a mad scientist- almost forgot about him… As ridiculous as this makes it sound, the series is actually pretty good, all things considered.

Breaking the Translation Barrier
Fandom: Free!
Category: Slash
Rating: PG

Nitori is a huge fan of an American television drama about the Revolutionary War. One problem- he doesn’t speak English. At all. So he has to watch subtitled versions (sound familiar to anyone at all?). One day though, the episode didn’t have any subtitles, so he has to ask the one person around him who actually is fluent in English- Rin. Rin hates the show, but agrees to translate anyway, because he’s oddly fond of Nitori. But then he starts messing around with the translations, and purposely messes up three very important English words. I’ll let you guess what those words are… :P

The Downsides of Absenteeism
Fandom: Free!
Category: Gen
Rating: High PG-13/Low R

Even in the flashbacks to elementary school, Haru’s parents seem to not really be in the picture at all. This would probably have implications for the important things in life that everyone needs to know. Personally I don’t know that much about the Japanese educational system- do they have health class? But anyway, due to the lack of his parents and his habit of spacing out in class, Haru never got the “birds and the bees” talk, so Makoto has to do it. And demonstrates with a cucumber. While the premise is really quite slashy it’s entirely gen.

What happens when Lee Jordan and George Weasley are elderly and have to go into a retirement home? Will they still be the same pranking goofballs they were as teenagers? The answer is, of course, yes, but there’s a sweetly sad side to the story as well.

The day Harry turned 16, he received a time-locked letter from his father, revealing that James Potter was not his biological father. Convinced that he was going to die, Snape and Harry's mother performed a ritual that would make it possible for a woman to have the child of a deceased (or close to dying) individual. That child was Harry, and the repercussions that follow make for a very interesting story, although one that does seem to veer off in random directions at times, it largely does circle back to the main plot.

Don't be alarmed by the length of the story- it is fairly long but it only took me about two days to read, and that was with frequent interruptions and me running errands and things.

Argh. Summer classes suck. This rec’s early this month because of the summer classes, it’s extremely unlikely I’m going to have time to really do much of anything with regards to the blog until the end of July, and I have an exam towards the end of this month.

There’s also a bit of femslash on this rec. Are you surprised? And believe it or not, this is also one of the most SFW fic recs I’ve ever done. I actually don’t think there’s a single story over PG-13 rating here, although one does kind of skirt the line there.

Apparently, the animators intended to put a character named Kaede in the show instead of Rei at first, but they changed their minds. There were a few sketches and character designs, but other than that, nothing was done with the character. This author takes that and extrapolates the character designs into a whole new character- Kaede Kobayashi, Haru’s weird, hyperactive cousin. Mostly it’s a goofy comedy fic, but there’s a bit of a darker thread lurking there that I’m interested to see what the writer does with it.

From finding out that Coulson had been stabbed in the heart by Loki, to finding out what had happened to Director Fury in the episode where the team finds out that SHIELD had been infiltrated by HYDRA. This really pisses off Draco’s father, who planned to marry him off to someone with a lot of money, so he sues Neville for raping his son and destruction of property, In order to settle things, Draco agrees to marry Neville, despite the fact that Neville might not have actually wanted to marry the guy who falsely accused him of sexual assault. I’d heard of it, of course- apparently last year when it came out it enraged a bunch of weeaboo neckbeards because it’s kind of fujoshi-bait instead of their usual moeblob anime, but that wasn’t enough to get me interested enough to watch it. I finally did watch it after someone on Reddit recommended it to me, and I ended up loving it. And I also ended up walking away shipping everyone in various permutations. This story features Rin topping the hell out of Haru, while Haru wears an apron. Yep. That’s it. That’s the entire fic, and the best way I can think of to describe it. It’s also insanely hot, so definitely go read it.

Oh, if only this website had a more usable interface… it seems there’s some truly good hidden gems in here, once you get past the scores and scores of lousy self-insert Mary Sue “Harry had a lost sister” fics, but the site is so complex and ugly as to be practically unusable. And it’s rating system is incredibly whack- of the fics I’ve read on there with the “mature” box marked, none of them seem to be rating higher than a high PG-13, possibly low R. I just can’t figure it out. Anyway. Enough about me complaining. This author has written a story of how Andromeda Black met Ted Tonks- Word of God states that he was failing a class and the professor assigned Andromeda to be his tutor. But what if it was more complicated than that? What if Andromeda was already engaged to someone, who wasn’t a good person? What if she starts to see her family as they really were? I was surprised- I don’t usually read this sort of thing, but it hooked me from the first chapter and I have to say, I really like the snarky way this author writes dialog.

Like I said earlier in the rec, I really enjoyed Free! when I watched it, and I’m really looking forward to the second season coming this summer. Which is doubly interesting because usually I couldn’t give less of a fuck about sports. But anyway. This story focuses on a really unlikely pair- Mikoshiba Seijuurou and Tachibana Makoto, and you get to learn a lot about Seijuurou’s family. The two guys are such dorks- that was the most awkward sex scene I’ve ever read, but at least they work towards getting it better in the future… the story is incomplete so I have every confidence that it will end better for them.

This Should Have Been Settled A Decade Ago

But apparently it's not. How many fucking times do we have to go over this? I remember why I stopped hanging out on the website this came up on in the first place, too- too much of this kind of shit.

Why someone preferes to read and write slash (as opposed to het or femslash) is none of your fucking concern. It's their business. Not your business. Theirs. Not yours. You dig?

It does not mean they hate women. It does not mean they have hangups with their own sexuality. Maybe it's just what they prefer.

But Longcat almighty, this seems to pop up at the weirdest times. I was on an anonymous commenting board and someone was talking about the new fic they were planning, which was a very long slash novel-length fic. Almost immediately, someone jumped on them to demand what their gender was and their sexual orientation, and that if they weren't a gay guy they hated their own gender.

This shit has been going on since I've been in fandom, which is getting on 10 years now. And it never stops coming up.

Everyone who keeps dredging this up (and yes, this probably includes me) needs to get the fuck over themselves. Does it really matter what someone does as their hobby? I don't care what you do in your spare time as long as it's not something like, I dunno, eating people or whatever. It's just not my concern. Unfortunately, the rest of humanity hasn't seemed to catch up to that yet.

Filthy Rich had no idea what his daughter Diamond Tiara was doing at school, but when Cheerilee calls him in for a conference, he learns quickly that his daughter isn't as innocent as he always thought. The author really does well at capturing Rich's pain when he realizes what's happening, and his realization that he'd failed as a parent.

Despite it’s ridiculous, crack-tastic premise (Tony orders Steve a Russian mail-order bride as a joke, said mail-order bride turns out to be the Winter Soldier), this story actually manages to have a lot of feels. Eventually, though, “Dmitri’s” past catches up with him, and they realize exactly what had happened.

Holy shit. 80 chapters! This fic took me the better part of the month to read, and every moment spent reading it was worth it. My one complaint is that I’m not crazy about the website it’s posted on- I don’t like the user interface, but that’s a minor issue compared to the rest of the story. Sirius Black breaks out of Azkaban years before he did in canon, and takes Harry away from the Dursleys, sparking a massive nation-wide manhunt by the ministry of magic. That’s really just scratching the surface of this incredibly complex tale, but if I tried to explain all the intricacies we’d be here until the apocalypse, so you might as well just read it. One thing you should know- the author marked this story as “mature” on the website, but it’s really not that bad- there is some graphic violence towards the end, but nothing that I feel warrants a higher rating than PG-13.

Picking up where the last one left off, Sirius is now a free man, and now he has the job he’d had before the events that got him locked up back. Harry and company are starting their first year at Hogwarts. Lupin is now the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and Draco has to get used to being put into a very different house than he expected to be. I can’t go on too much about the plot because it would spoil the first story, but so far it seems to be shaping up to be a very good sequel to the original.

AAAAARGH

I really don't care about your Important Thoughts on Important Social Issues. Especially not in your fanfiction.

I read fanfiction for the lulz. Not as a replacement for an Angry Studies class. ESPECIALLY not fanfiction that is advertised as a humorous crack fic where the characters go on an adventure to save their city from evil aliens kidnapping all the men, which is what this was supposed to be. I do not want to read your Very Important Feelings on political lesbianism. I don't even know what the fuck that's supposed to mean- like lesbian politicians? Which could be interesting. BUT NOT IN THE GODDAMN CRACK FIC.

In the main All-American Girl story, Fluttershy’s daughter Cinnamon Star tells DJ about what happened to her biological parents, a banker and a postal worker- they had been murdered by humans. This story focuses on the aftermath of that and the investigation that surrounded that murder. The story follows Shining Badge, the sheriff of the town in question as he gets brought on board the international investigation. Fic Rec #38

It seems last month was kind of a fluke- this month's fic rec was a lot easier for me to do. So, until further notice, the fic recs will continue to be a once-a-month thing instead of once every other month. Enjoy! And if my brother’s friend is reading this, bugger off. The story behind how Dean Hardscrabble of Monsters University managed to get her record-breaking scare- the one that Sully and Mike accidentally break while they were fighting in the lecture hall. It takes place around 1969 or thereabouts, and Dean Hardscrabble is sent to collect screams from a boarding school. There’s a bit of discussion about how kid’s fears have been changing since WWII and how it might affect the future of the job, but it’s not the main point of the story. Overall, it’s a quiet, introspective look at what one would have to do as a Scarer in the company, and the complexities that come along with the job.

To be honest I don’t even really like femslash most of the time, with a few exceptions, but especially not this particular pairing, since FitzSimmons is clearly meant to be. In any case, I don’t seek it out. HOWEVER. This is an exception. Genetically engineered dinosaurs > everything else, and even though I wasn’t sold on the pairing the rest of the story was hilarious enough that it canceled out the “dafuq?” factor I got from the pairing. Thor wanting to keep it as a pet was priceless on its own, and Director Fury’s reaction was icing on the cake for me. Brilliant.

This is one of those stories where I really kind of fought with myself over whether or not I wanted to include it on this rec, because while I really enjoyed it overall, there were a few things that I did not particularly care for. But eventually I decided that I liked it enough to overlook those things, so even though this story is on one of these lists, take it with a bit of a grain of salt. While overall it’s a fascinating story about what would happen if the Dursleys had been killed in an industrial accident while on vacation in America, and Tony Stark adopted Harry, there are a few things that are somewhat more complicated in there. I don’t particularly care for the portrayal of Dumbledore as a fairly incompetent, corrupt idiot, and this writer’s Harry comes off as, well… way more mature than I think a pre-teen should. But again, don’t let this stop you. I enjoyed it overall despite it having some elements I did not particularly care for.

I can’t believe I forgot to put this on the January rec! Once again, this story is part of the All-American Girl storyline. Reading the first story in that might be a good idea, as well as Polarity, although Polarity isn’t finished yet. This particular story has a different feel from the rest of the series, mainly because there is no DJ Martinez/Sandalwood yet to throw a monkey wrench into everything. This is the story of how DJ’s biological parents, Rarity and Silversteel, met, as well as the incidents that ended up complicating their relationship. Truth be told, it’s actually amazing DJ exists at all, based on what happens in this story…

This was written before the conclusion of the series, so it doesn’t really follow the canon very well- although Ron and Hermione are married. Dumbledore posthumously casts a spell on Harry and Snape, deaging them to seven-year-olds in order to give them a chance to enjoy the life growing up that they never had the chance to when they were kids. This was written quite some time ago (possibly even before the Order of the Phoenix) so most of the stuff about Snape’s past was incorrect, and there are some hints to slightly more mature content in the first and last chapter (before and after any deaging, respectively). If you’re not into slash, or not into the pairing (which I’ll be honest- isn’t really my cup of tea most of the time either), you can skip the last chapter with very little problems for understanding the story.

I started watching this show because it comes on before Sleepy Hollow and I'm lazy and don't like to have to hunt around for the television remote when the time comes, and I started enjoying it as much as the show that comes on after it. Anyway, Rudy, the robot technician, ends up finding a damaged robot and he starts to rebuild him, only to realize, oh shit, he's a sexbot. As time goes by, Rudy becomes more and more attracted to the android, while trying to hide it. After the android saves his life, he starts to admit he has fallen for him. The end result is surprisingly cute, for such a dark show full of explosions.

This story was written back in December of 2012, before Twilight Sparkle became an alicorn in the show and before it was even announced. Alicorns, in canon, are immortal- they don’t age and die. However, this story focuses on an elderly Twilight Sparkle’s decline. It is incredibly hard to read all the way to the end, because you track her going from an elderly, yet vital researcher to a pony unable to do the most basic things like dress herself, eat, or even speak. Hits you right in the feels, and reminds you to enjoy every day while you can, and to spend time with your elderly friends and family while you can, too.

This is an incredibly long fic for a oneshot, but it had me laughing the whole way through. I have to admit as well, that the pairing (Snape/Hermione) is growing on me… anyway, in this story, which seems to have been written quite a while ago, as it ignores several very major plot points from books 5 and on, Snape has a plan to defeat Voldemort once and for all. Man, when you crossover a crossover, things get complicated pretty quickly. The Housemates series is already pretty complex, now Coneycat (the author) has included the Harry Potter universe! However, I think that this fic will be the only one including the Harry Potter universe in this universe she has created (and the word “universe” no longer looks like a real word to me, I typed it so much). Loki's family is a family of pure-blood wizards. A few days before he goes to Hogwarts for the first time, he finds out that he's not actually his parents' child- his real parents were in Azakaban, put there by Odin (who was an Auror during the Second Wizarding War). He meets his friends and gets into all sorts of magical mishaps, finally culminating with a dramatic family scene. I love this fic series, I've read them all multiple times, and this one doesn't disappoint.

Princess Luna is sick of Celestia screwing around with her, so she finds a long forbidden spell-book and uses one of the spells in there to turn Celestia into a foal. Unfortunately, she didn’t read the fine print: the spell was created by a psychotic unicorn stallion in order to depose Celestia- if the spell was used on an alicorn, it would be permanent instead of a few hours’ worth of foal-hood. The attempt to get the princess back to normal reveals some things that maybe should have been kept buried. Please be aware that while most of this fic is pretty innocuous, there are two chapters that include incredibly graphic violence. It’s not quite to the level of Cupcakes yet, but it’s pretty jarring if you’re not expecting it.

I actually really prefer this fic to the first one, but if you don’t read the first one, this one won’t make too much sense, so I included the first one as well on this rec, even though I like this one much better. The forbidden spell gets used again, this time as a punishment for Prince Blueblood, the douche-y prince nephew of Princesses Celestia and Luna.. As punishment for what he’s done wrong, he gets turned into a foal and sent back to Magic Kindergarten so that he can learn to be a better pony.. This story is absolutely hilarious, and flows better than the original (I think). It is also quite a bit less graphically violent. However, be aware that it has one hell of a twist ending- now I really hope the author does another sequel so I can figure out what happens there!

Fic Rec #34: First Time Recs Edition

Yeah, I know I'm cutting it kind of close this month. I’ve been busy. Take it up with my professors if you want to file a complaint. No, seriously, do take it up with them- I don’t think they’ll listen to me. I also haven’t really been in the mood to read too much fic this month, either- most of this stuff I read last month or earlier and added it to my list of things to potentially rec later.

Anyway. This year, due to a variety of circumstances, I’ve been a bit lazy on the themed fic recs front. I honestly wasn’t expecting to do one this month, but then I realized that most of the fics on this list were from fandoms I hadn’t ever included on one of these lists before. So the stories from fandoms I’d recced before got shunted off into next month’s rec so that this one could be a themed one. This is also among the most SFW fic recs I’ve ever posted- the highest rating on here is a high PG-13/ very low R rating, so you should be able to read them wherever without too much terrible trouble.

If you were in elementary school computer class any time between 1994-2002, you probably played a game called Oregon Trail. The premise of the game was that you were a pioneer, trying to go to the Oregon Territory. Very few people ever made it through that game, most people seemed to end up dying of dysentery or starvation. I think I got to the end of the game once. All your little pixel people, after everything they went through to get to Oregon, why would they ever want to go back? This fic explores that, and there's a sort of horrific twist at the end that makes you go “holy shit!” NOW you know why they left Oregon. I'm not going to spoil it though, you should go read it yourself!

Stupid Ideas
Fandom: Gokusen
Category: Het
Rating: High PG-13/Low R

Gokusen is a Japanese television drama that I’ve watched a couple of times now. It’s about a woman who grew up in a Yakuza family, expected to become the next boss after her grandfather (the current boss) passes on. But she never wanted to become Yakuza, so she becomes a high school teacher instead. Unfortunately for her, she ends up getting stuck with the “problem” class. It’s hilarious and awkward all at the same time… much like this fic. Kumiko (the teacher) accidentally barges in on Shin (one of her students) while he was fapping, much to both of their horrors. While this fic is short, it really comes up close to the line of embarrassment squick and maybe pokes a toe at it.

A Practical Application Of The Buttered Cat Paradox
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Category: Gen
Rating: G

Welcome to Night Vale is a humor podcast I’ve taken to listening to when I have to commute to the satellite campus to go to class. If you’ve ever listened to A Prairie Home Companion on NPR, especially the Tales from Lake Wobegone section, you’d have an idea of what this was like, if the denizens of Lake Wobegone were Lovecraftian horrors. Also, nothing seems to work in this town normally. I could go into more detail, but it would take a long time. What you need to know for this fic is that there is Cecil, the radio announcer (who may or may not actually be Cthulu), and Carlos, the human scientist who is checking out the town. There are also floating kittens. While a lot of WtNV fic, you really do need to know the canon to make sense of, this one is simple enough to understand- there are floating kittens, and if you’ve ever seen the image macro about attaching toast to cats, then you’ll get this fic.

Ten Clicks
Fandom: Sleepy Hollow
Category: Gen
Rating: G

You know, as I was writing up a quick plot summary for the show (Sleepy Hollow) I was going to mention how odd it was that there was an abundance of fluffy, goofy fic for a show about a dude from the Revolutionary War who gets brought to the year 2013 and has to help fight off the Apocalypse with a female cop. And then I realized that the premise itself is absurd enough, so why shouldn’t there be a lot of goofy fic? Basically, in this one, Ichabod learns about Wikipedia, and a lot about the modern world.

Multi-Chapter Fics

Never Had A Friend Like Me
Fandom: Fairly Odd Parents
Category: Gen
Rating: PG
Completion Status: 22 chapters, in progress

When Norm, the douchebag genie from Fairly OddParents ends up with a lonely kid as his “master,” he ends up becoming quite fond of her. Unfortunately for him, she ends up moving to Dimmsdale and she interacts with Timmy Turner at lot, causing some serious problems for the genie. And while he might be less of a douche to the little girl, he’s still pretty douche-y. Fairly long for a story of its kind, I quite enjoyed this one, and it’s still ongoing.

I Ate The Textbook

We need to have a bit of a talk, folks.

If you want people to read your fics and fandom essays, you need to make them actually readable to the majority of the population. And I'm not talking weird-ass fonts and bright-ass colors, I'm talking about the language that you use itself.

While I was working on the fic rec for this month, over the past few days I've come across what feels like a ton of fics that are filled with highly specialized terminology and concepts that are not accessible to anyone who's not in sociology or gender studies or whatever. No one is saying that you have to dumb down your language to the level of the Cat in the Hat, but it is very frustrating to have to constantly Google words because you don't know what they mean. The other day, one of the fics I was reading included a reference to “kyriarchical oppressions.” I have no idea if I spelled that right, either, because it's not a word, according to spell-checker. I... wasn't sure what that meant, so I looked it up. The word “kyriarchical” apparently is highly specialized terminology used in academic circles, especially in sociology, gender and women's studies, that sort of discipline. Which is great! If you're interested in that, go nuts! Use all the bigass words you want!

But if you're putting things out there for public consumption, you really need to tone down the jargon a bit if you want to be understood. If I'm trying to explain something about computers to people, I don't ramble on and on about bootstrapping and the BIOS and bash shells and technical jargon that they likely wouldn't understand. I'd say something like “the thing that makes your computer turn on.” Because unless you have a very good understanding of computers or have studied IT or comp sci, most people just go “huh?” when you throw the jargon at them.

Also, consider the platform. I have no doubt that there are probably people out there that want to read a dissertation in fic form. I don't. I'm not everyone, but I think a lot of casual readers will not want to read that. I have always found that sort of thing boring and tiresome, but again, it's a free Internet and you can write what you want. But if you want to appeal to a larger group, you should probably tone it down. I especially do not want to read thinly veiled diatribes about why something is “problematic” when I was expecting fanfiction.

Maybe I'm the one that needs to get over it. But I can't help but feel a bit awkward when I click on something that looks interesting only to get a barely-comprehensible screed that sounds like someone swallowed the sociology textbook.
