Guess who's back?

Yep. I'm back.

It was a difficult semester, I'll be honest with you. I was suffering from back pain which still hasn't completely gone away, I've been dealing with my parents preparing to move, and I got a job. But I'm okay, for the most part.

I just really haven't been in the mood to write anything, whether it's fic or blog. But now that the semester is over, I think I'll be in a better mood to update a little more often.

Just not today. I'm tired today. But please don't worry, I think things are going to start getting better. At least I'm not on the OxyContin anymore for the back pain, that was rough, and thankfully I wound up passing all my classes, which was looking a little sketchy for a while.

Yeah, I know, something's not working right. I think the stylesheet code got corrupted somehow. Things might look a little wonky here for a little bit, but I'll have the Lawn back to normal ASAP (although possibly with a new look).

EDIT- Okay, and we're back, with a new look! It's going to take a little while to get used to, maybe, but I like it so far. It's less... pink.

I'm Still Here

I know it's been a while since my last update, but things have been kind of crazy around here. First I had relatives from out of the country around for a while and a lot of my free time was spent shuttling them around to various places and whatnot. Then I found out a friend of mine had passed away unexpectedly. And then midterms hit, and I've been spending almost every spare second trying to get ready for those. And to be honest, I don't really see myself having much time until the winter break this year. It's almost the end of the month and I've barely read any fic, so there probably won't be a rec this month unless I can somehow find some spare time and some fic I like enough to want to rec.

I'm not going to close the blog down, but I probably won't have much time to do too much with it until December. I'm not abandoning you guys, I promise. Things are just kind of crazy right now and I don't really have enough spare time to write anything, except my term papers.

In case anyone is interested, I know have a MakeupAlley account, in case you actually give a damn about what makeup I'm wearing and what I think about it. I have some reviews up already, so if you're interested go ahead and check it out!

Out of Office

Well, sort of.  Depending on your definition of "office" and "out of," that is.

Tomorrow I'm heading out to visit relatives for the next two or so weeks and won't have reliable Internet access. My relatives technically have Internet... at their main house, and most of the time, I'll be at their summer home, which does not have Internet. Or television, or even a phone. Even cell reception kind of sucks there, since it is quite literally in the middle of nowhere. Not to mention the fact that it's going to take two days to get there, and there's no Internet on the road.

Anyway, I'm probably going to be out of contact for a good portion of the next two weeks- if there is really an emergency, the best way to contact me is probably through Twitter since that doesn't take a whole lot of mobile data to access (I'm @NotoriousKaboom), but I  can't guarantee I'll be able to get back to you at all, especially while I'm at the summer home, since unless something has changed drastically in the time it's been since I was there last, there's barely any cell phone reception, let alone reliable Internet access without going into town. Hopefully nothing too crazy will happen while I'm gone.

And now I need to go pack. See you all in two or so weeks!

It's Done

I finally turned in my paperwork to switch majors.

Now if you'll excuse me I have a bottle of vodka that's calling my name so I can drown my sorrows.

Temporary Lockdown

IJ may have been compromised by the “heartbleed” leak, so the Lawn is going temporarily offline until things have been resolved and I am certain that the data breach is no longer a threat. It may be nothing, but because of the severirty of the breach the Lawn will not be updated again until I can be sure that it's safe to do so.

Even though I am saying this, please do not panic. Amazon and the major credit card companies are okay, as are most banks. It is just that some websites may be threatened, and this is one of them. If you want to check on a specific site, use this link.

If you do need to contact me send me an email, like usual.

The State of the Union

X-post from my FimFiction blog, edited to be more relevant to the readers here.

One of these days I'm going to write a blog post with good news. Today is not that day.

I'm going to be honest with you guys: I don't know when I'll next be able to update. Yesterday morning I found out that something I've been dreading for several years is going to be happening a lot faster than I expected. I'm going to have to find somewhere to live a lot earlier than I expected.

Currently, I live with my parents. I do this because my parents live very close to my university and because I tried living in the dormitories for a year. The end result was that I became quite ill from the close quarters and stress, and to this day I've not completely recovered. My health was never very good to begin with, but living in a dorm exacerbated it to the point where, when I came home that summer, I almost had to be hospitalized. So I moved home. I've known that my parents would be moving eventually, and that I was going to have to find somewhere else to live. I just didn't expect it to be until next year at the earliest.

Yesterday, a realtor came to my house and told my parents that if they want to get a good deal on selling their house they would have to get most of the stuff out of it by Christmas in order to sell it. Which doesn't bode well for me. I have nowhere else to live, but the realtor was very clear that they would need to clear out "any evidence that another adult lives here if you want to sell the house- people don't want to live in a house that's had multiple tenants." I should have told her, bitch, I'm not a tenant, I've lived in this damn house for 14 years now. It's my fucking house! I grew up here!

So, I don't know what's going to happen. If it turns out I have to move, then I likely will not have the time to get much writing at all done. Even if I don't have to move right away I'm really upset and not feeling up to really doing much at all except getting blackout drunk. I don't know how I'm going to finish the semester now with this hanging over my head. I need to keep my grades up, but this really just sucked all the energy out of me. I just want to curl up, drink, eat the hell out of something really unhealthy, and cry.

Well, this is awkward...

One of my brother's friends found my fanfiction through my My Little Pony fics. He found my blog and based on some of what I talked about figured out I was his friend's elder sister.

So now anything that is either not MLP fic, or anything rated PG or under has been locked down and I'll be using a different username to post my fic from here on out, except, again, for pony fic and any in-progress stories I already had going on. If you want to know what the new username is leave me a comment here or email me at

And if you're reading this, brother's friend, in the future, maybe don't tell people that you've found their fanfiction, because that's a bit alarming and stalkery. I know you're a brony, but still, did you have to tell me you found it? Yikes.

And We're Back

Yeah, I know the blog wasn't accessible for a few days. Squeaky, the admin of IJ, was transferring all the data to new, more robust servers and it took a while. With the amount of data on the IJ servers, it's pretty incredible that he was able to get it back up so fast- usually server transfers of this size either take four or five days, or it goes faster but something goes wrong and the “new, more robust” servers are anything but. Server maintenance can be a bitch, but Squeaky seemed to get the site through alright. I don't seem to have mysteriously dropped any posts, and with the exception of three user icons which I don't use really anyway, the Lawn seems to have come through alright.

Cheers, Squeaky!

Kaboom's Japan Adventure: Weeks 1&2

I am not entirely sure if this is going to go through or not, the Internet here is absolutely wretched and I cannot afford 5000 yen for a half an hour of access at the closest Internet cafe. I was planning to do an update while I was in Tokyo, but then I fell ill again and was too busy trying to get ready to go to Akita to do much of anything else. As it is, I've been in Japan for a week and a half so far, and things have been... strange.

Not strange in a bad way, mind you, just... strange in general. I got lost in Ginza. I went a bit overboard in Itoya (also in Ginza), which is one of the biggest office supply stores in the world. I now need to figure out how to ship half an Office Depot back to the United States with me, since I bought a ridiculous amount of stuff while there. I went shopping, which was fun, although a bit frustrating. I'm a bit taller than the average Japanese woman, and a bit wider as well, even though I'm within the norms for my age and ethnic group, so finding clothes here is a bit of a challenge. Trying to do the wash here is a challenge as well, as I do not read Japanese enough and I think the washing machines here are older than me. I am getting along quite well with my roommate, and my classes seem to be going well. I got placed a little bit lower than I would have liked- apparently I kind of bombed the placement test. But oh well, it's not as though I wasn't really expecting something like this. Considering how smooth the trip has been until now (with the obvious exception of me getting sick again), it was only a matter of time before something went wrong, really. And of things that could potentially go wrong, getting placed in a lower class barely registers. I haven't lost my passport, had my shit stolen, ended up hospitalized, or gotten deported. When I think of that, it doesn't matter.

I've been enjoying Japan so far. My biggest complaint is the lousy Internet connection. As I type this, it's kicked me off a couple of times. Most of the permanent students here at Akita International University don't try to bother with the university's Internet, it's that bad. But I can't afford to go to the Internet cafe whenever I want to get online, I'd be broke in a couple of hours. So I'm just trying to access when I can, and only then for a few minutes at a time. It's been difficult. My parents always like to yell at me about my “Internet addiction,” and for a while I thought they were full of crap. Now, I'm not so sure. I don't know what to do with myself when I'm not in class or studying. I don't want to go to the shoipping mall all the time, because, again, the whole money problem. My dormitory is too small to spend a lot of time in there, and every time I go out into the public areas people always want to try to make conversation. Which I don't mind, usually, but it does get a bit annoying when I'm trying to study. I am not really sure if it's cultural differences or something, but where I am from, sitting with headphones in and a textbook open in front of you means “sod off, I'm trying to study here!”

But it doesn't matter. All in all, I've been having a great time. I just wish this nasty cold would go away already, I want to be able to enjoy my trip to the fullest. I'm also not super impressed with the university's food. It's not terrible, but it's also not great, either. It's actually very bland. And I never thought this would happen, since I love rice, but I'm actually getting kind of tired of it. I also miss being able to drink soda whenever I want to. There's soda here, but it's not the same soda we get in America. It's got all sorts of different flavors. And some of them are just... baffling, for lack of a better word. Corn flavored soda? No thanks. Although the melon flavor is tasty.

Tomorrow we are going to an aquarium and a seaside town as part of the program. I am kind of torn between being a bit annoyed that they're herding us arund like a bunch of kindergarten kids (seriously, I'm 21 years old, I do not need to be kept in line like a little kid anymore) and being excited. Apparently there is a very cute baby polar bear at the aquarium that I want to see. And there might be penguins! I will try to get some pictures, although I cannot promies that I will actually be able to upload anything, given the terrible Internet connection. I am somewhat worried that this post might not even go through, but I will try.

I just hope I can figure something out about the Internet problem, because I think I'm going to lose my mind if I can't connect regularly. I don't even need to be online every second of every day, I just need to be able to do something other than study and sleep.

Jun. 10th, 2013

So I just found out that I might not be able to take my medicine to Japan with me.

If that's actually the case, then I am so fucked.

I can see on my stat counter that I've had a visitor from Japan. If you're out there and you see this, would you mind contacting me at to let me know if there's going to be a problem? This is incredibly important, I have a little over 24 hours to get this sorted.

Thanks in advance.

Pardon My Dust

I have no idea what happened to my old blog theme, so here's a new one.

Unfortunately, although I like this one a lot, there's no more visible user pics on the page, nor are my tags visible. However, if you want to browse by tags, the third lamp from the top on the sidebar will take you to my tags page. Alternatively, if you want to see what a particular entry is tagged, just click on the number at the bottom- it's for comments but it will also give you the post's actual URL, and you can browse the comments from there.

I apologize for any distress this has caused any of my readers. I know it distressed me, logging on to realize, oh shit what happened to my theme?

New theme is from here

EDIT 3.11.2012- Well, the layout I picked last night kept crashing my browser, so we're using a completely different one. I'm not entirely happy with this one, either, but I suppose I'll get used to it. Part of me is kinda cranky that we can't use Flexible Squares here on IJ, unless we have a paid account, but given the problems I've been having with IJ lately, I don't really want to pay for a paid account- especially because if this keeps happening I'm moving the Lawn to Wordpress, even though I'm not overly fond of them either.

The current layout is from here.

(Title Translation: Kaboom Goes to Japan! )

Some of you might be wondering why I’ve been so absent lately. I haven’t really regularly updated the blog since 2012, and it might be confusing you a bit. And since I got my final confirmation today, I feel like I can finally give an explanation as to why I’ve been AWOL, and why I will probably continue to be updating rather sporadically through the end of July.

I have been pulling extra shifts at both of my jobs to make some extra money. I need five grand by June, but for once it’s not for an emergency or anything. I am going to participate in a study abroad program in Akita, Japan!

Obviously I’m very excited about this, and I can’t wait to go. But due to the high cost of the trip (a plane ticket by itself is $1300 USD), I am going to have to work even more than usual to help to take care of the costs. While the cost of the trip is ridiculously low for seven weeks in Japan, it still costs approximately the same as a used car, and there’s no pay-as-you-go plan. Not only will I need to pay for the trip itself, I’ll also need several thousand dollars for incidentals and potential emergencies. Add in the fact that I still have my other classes to deal with, and it’s clear I won’t have a ton of free time until after my final exams for the semester are over. And even then I’ll still probably be running around like a crazy person until I actually head out of the country, to save as much money as possible for my trip.

So what does this mean for the Lawn, and for my writing?

Well, to put it bluntly, the Lawn and my writing will be going on semi-hiatus until I leave for the trip in mid-June. This means that apart from the fic rec, there will probably only be about two or three posts a month, when I have the time to write them up. As for my fanfiction… well, that one’s a little trickier, because I tend to write when I have the inspiration. As I usually come back from my classes or my jobs exhausted, that’s not really conducive to writing well, either blog posts or fic, but if I do get in the mood to write, I probably will. I will attempt to keep the fic to a somewhat regular posting schedule.

Of course, none of this is set in stone. If something big happens and I want to blog about it, I will, but as a general rule, don’t freak out if it seems like only the fic rec and a few random pieces get published every now and then. I’m fine, I’m just working my ass off.
I’m really looking forward to this trip, and I’m really hoping that my Japanese language skills will improve dramatically while I’m there!

Just FYI

The flag thingie at the top of the page does have an option to record your IP address... if I pay 30 dollars. I do not want to pay 30 dollars. I swear I'm not collecting your personal data, I just like to see the flags. Sorry if that caused anyone concern. I swear I'm not doing anything nefarious with it, unless you count wanting to know what countries my visitors come from as nefarious.

Dec. 28th, 2012

See you in 2013!

I was planning on doing some stuff for this blog before New Year, but I'm sick again. I'm going to take the time to sleep and try to recover before I go to work again, so the Lawn will be going dark until after New Year. As usual, if you do need to get in touch with me I'll still be checking email so go ahead and contact me if necessary.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!

Fic Update

Since I've been having some questions about when I'll be next updating my fanfiction, I've decided to do this post to hopefully clear some things up. This schedule could change and it is not set in stone, though, so do be aware of that.

Partisanship: this is the one I've been getting the most questions on. Yes, I said I would update again in November a few months ago, and I've done everything I could to keep to that schedule. Unfortunately real life decided to get extremely complicated over the past couple of weeks, and I'm still working on the chapter. I'd estimate I'm about 80% done with the chapter at the moment, and it will be up by next Saturday (12.8.2012) come hell or high water. There are only two more chapters in the entire story (including the one I'm working on now), and I intend to complete it before 2013, assuming the world doesn't end.

The Donors: I'm working on it. Expect the next chapter in mid-December, and a special holiday bonus story before Christmas.

Syntax Error That Launched a Thousand Ships: On hiatus. Probably will be picked up again once I've completed The Donors.
