Are you a fool?

A few days ago I ran across this quiz on a blog I occasionally read. I was intrigued. As you can probably tell from the Parenting for Sadists series I have a bit of a disturbing obsession with religious fundamentalists, probably because of how close my mother came to becoming one. Anyway, I took this test, and got a D. Apparently, I'm a fool. But let's take a look at what the questions are like, shall we?

This is the first question, and its possible responses: How do you respond when criticized/corrected?

A. I hate it! I get angry and defensive!
B. I usually laugh it off (sometimes I roll my eyes)
C. If I get criticized for the same thing enough times, I usually start to take it seriously.
D. I'm thankful for the smallest hint of reproof and take it very seriously.

Never mind that these answers are obviously designed to steer you in one direction, they also completely miss the fact that there's different kind of criticism. Yeah, if my boss corrects me I'll take it seriously and try to improve, but if my younger brother calls me a dumbass? Then I'm probably just going to roll my eyes at him and tell him to go play his video games. If a friend tells me, “hey Kaboom, you're out of line,” then yeah, most of the time I'll listen. But if someone who I barely know criticizes me about something inane and expects me to actually listen to them, well then, I have a bridge to sell them in Alaska. Don't get me wrong, some criticism is valid, but not every single bit of criticism is. Remember middle school gym class, with that one bitch who called you fucktarded because you missed the volleyball that would have been impossible to get unless you were made of rubber bands? She didn't have any useful criticism, she just felt like being a bitch and you happened to be the first person she caught doing something she could criticize.

Here's the third question, and its responses: When I talk, I tend:

A. Mainly to make people laugh.
B. To let everyone know what I'm thinking and feeling.
C. To get into trouble with my big mouth.
D. To encourage and edify people.

Ignoring the fact that these responses are obviously trying to get you to click on the “right” answer, think about this for a minute: you talk about different things with different people. When you're with people you don't know, you probably talk about random, innocuous things like the weather or the holidays that are coming up. When you're with your work superiors and coworkers, odds are you talk about work. When you're with your friends, however, you probably talk about whatever you feel like. Sometimes, you talk about more serious issues. But other times, you just want to laugh at some stupid shit you saw on the Internet or something. What this test fails to take into account is that there are multiple situations in which a person could act one way, and many other situations in which that same person could act in a completely different manner. To ignore that, is the true foolishness.

30 Day Music Challenge: Days 29 and 30

The past few days have been really busy- job hunting during the day, hanging out with my friends at night, and I've barely had any time to use the computer, and missed these two. And we're finally done! That's the last time I do a 30 Day Anything- I was really sick of it by Day 10. But I'm also one of those people who tries to finish what I start, so I kept on with it. Finally, I'm done.

Day 29: A song from your childhood: Aaron's Party (Come Get It)- Aaron Carter

There are a lot of songs from my childhood, even more that I remember from the late 1990s/early 2000s. But I really liked this one when I was in third grade, and I heard it on the radio the other day. It immediately got stuck in my head and took me back to that time. And listening to it now? I don't know why I liked it so much. Aaron Carter's singing voice is kind of annoying, imho.

Day 30: Your favourite song at this time last year:
I honestly don't remember.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 28

Day 28: A song that makes you feel guilty: Handlebars- Flobots

Despite the fact that my parents did their best to override this teaching, I was taught by my great-grandmother that the most important thing in this life is to get rich. That's the thing that matters, and she does have kind of a reason for this- she immigrated to the US right before the Depression, and was cheated by her husband, who she resented until he died. But this song is basically the opposite of that philosophy, and shows what happens when that ideology is taken to extremes. Makes me feel kind of guilty, because this is like the exact opposite of what I believe for a long time.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 27

Day 27: A song that you wish you could play: Für Elise- Beethoven

I've always wanted to be able to play this song, it's beautiful, but even when I was playing the piano regularly I wasn't very good at it.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 26

Day 26: A song that you can play on an instrument: Jingle Bells- no idea

I USED to be able to play more music on the piano and the saxophone, but I haven't done either in over five years. The only thing I can remember how to do is play Jingle Bells, unless I have some music and a couple of hours to try to reteach myself.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 25

Day 25: A song that makes you laugh: Space Space Shooter- Kick & Punch

I couldn't find the full version of this song in video format, but I did find this abridged version, which has the relevant portions to it. This song is full of ridiculous double entendre- "My game is so addictive/my action is so hot/so step up to me baby/put your coin in my slot/press my buttons baby/and jiggle that stick... etc" that it's impossible to listen to without at least cracking a smile. It also reminds me a bit of the relationship between two of my friends- they're engaged to each other, and the woman always complains about her fiance playing too much World of Warcraft and not paying enough attention to her. Although she didn't particularly like my idea of how to get his attention back on her...

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 24

Day 24: A song that you want to play at your funeral: Vanilla Twilight- Owl City

When I'm taking the dirt nap, I don't want my friends and family to feel too sad, I want them to remember the kind of person I was before I passed, and I want them to remember the good times we had together, not the pain left by my death. I want them to think of what it was like when I was alive, not what it was like after my death. Assuming that there's anyone who can be arsed to go to my funeral.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 23

Day 23: A song that you want to play at your wedding: Happy Summer Wedding- Morning Musume

Another Japanese song, this time quite a bit happier. It's actually about a wedding, so that makes it perfect, and it really shows the way everyone's reacted at every single wedding I've ever been to, in my (albeit limited) experience. Thanking your parents, being very proud about your future spouse- it reminds me of the weddings I've been to.
My apologies for the poor quality of the video, I couldn't find a better quality video at all, much less one with subtitles.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 22

Day 22: A song that you listen to when you’re sad: Planetarium- Ai Otsuka

This is a beautiful song with a deep meaning- it's subtitled here. While it's a very sad song, I still like to listen to it when I'm sad, because it comforts me somewhat. I listened to this song during one of the worst times of my life, and it's stayed with me since then. I love it. It's a sad song, but it still has that little glimmer of hope at the end, and it's soothing, like a lullaby. It helps calm me down if I'm very said. Be aware: the link leads to Megavideo because I couldn't find a full version on Youtube that had the whole song- just clips, or poorly-dubbed English covers.

30 Day Music Challenge: Days 19-21

The next couple of days I'm going to be traveling, and taking care of some personal business. I probably won't have time to use the computer until Monday, and that's at the very earliest, so I'm posting the next few days of this meme now.

Day 19: A song from your favorite album: Album? What album? I don't have albums, I have individual songs.

Day 20: A song that you listen to when you’re angry: Bullet With Butterfly Wings- Smashing Pumpkins

DESPITE ALL MY RAGE, I AM STILL JUST A RAT IN A CAGE. This is the angry song. I can't really describe it better than that.

Day 21: A song that you listen to when you’re happy: Super Honeymoon- Owl City

This song is so relaxing, but happy. It gives a general feeling of happiness, and for some reason if I'm in a particularly good mood I want to listen to it. Actually, a lot of Owl City's songs are like that. They're cute, and happy, but when they're not, they just make you think (like Vanilla Twilight, another song I like by him).

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 18

Day 18: A song that you wish you heard on the radio: Jalapeño- thecomputernerd01

This song is a parody of "Alejandro" by Lady Gaga, and I personally think it's much better. It's hilarious. It's so random, with ridiculous lyrics, but that just adds to its charm. I'd love to hear this song on the radio while I'm driving- it never fails to make me smile.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 17

Day 17: A song that you hear often on the radio: S&M- Rihanna

I hear this song very often on the radio, and the first time I heard it, I was like, "WTF? How can they play that on commercial, over-the-air radio? Wouldn't people get butthurt over it?" As it turns out, yes, the song did end up with some butthurt, but it also climbed to be #1 on the Billboard Top 40. And I actually kind of like it, it's catchy.

30 Day Music Challenge: Days 15 and 16

Wooo! Halfway done! Because I'm going to be running all over campus tomorrow taking exams, here's today's as well as tomorrow's Music Challenge post, since I'm probably not going to have time to use the computer tomorrow.

Day 15: A song that describes you: Omamori- Zetsubou Shoujotachi

English Lyrics here
Short, Subtitled Version
I've always felt somewhat of a connection with this song- maybe because it reminds me of my upbringing a lot, especially the last two lines: "That which you taught me- despair, that's my charm." That right there is about 75% of my life growing up. But that's a depressing story for another time.

Day 16: A song that you used to love but now hate: My Love- Justin Timberlake

I used to really like this song, but recently it's really depressing to me. I don't hear it all that often anymore, since it hasn't been played regularly on the radio for a few years now, but they played it the other day in the student union, and it was incredibly depressing. I'm not really sure why, it just is now.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 14

Day 14: A song that no one would expect you to love: Ring of Fire- Johnny Cash

This is another one of those songs that gets stuck in my head almost every time I hear it. But I actually like it. Usually it surprises people when they find out I like this song, because I don't really like country music all that much. I don't really think of Johnny Cash as being a country artist, but I guess that's what a lot of people think of when they hear him, so I guess so? I don't know.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 13

Day 13: A song that is a guilty pleasure: Never Say Never- Justin Bieber

Laugh all you want, I actually like this song. I actually didn't know who the hell Justin Bieber was until some relatives came to visit in Summer 2010. The triplet cousins are pre-teen girls with a serious case of Bieber Fever, and when I got conscripted to drive them around, they wanted to listen to Justin Bieber. I wasn't really impressed, but didn't have the hate-on for his stuff that a lot of people seem to.

And then I heard this song. And I actually liked it. I don't like to admit it, though- I'm a grown-ass adult and I'm listening to Justin Bieber?

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 12

Day 12: A song from a band you hate: Party in the USA- Miley Cyrus

OK, OK, so Miley Cyrus isn't a band. But I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I liked her, and this song at the top of the list of songs I absolutely despise. I'm not really sure what it is about her- maybe it's her arrogant attitude? The fact that all her lyrics sound like she was trying way too hard? Or maybe it's the way she moved so quickly to shed her Disney image? I'm really not all that much older than her, she's what, a year or two younger than me? but every time I see one of her music videos I'm reminded of my goddaughter clomping around the house in her mom's high-heeled shoes and asking me to do her makeup for her because she wants to feel like an adult. Obviously they're different situations, and I'm really not in any place to be saying this, considering that I'm really not a whole lot older than her, but I just don't get the feeling that Miley is really aware of what the real world is like. But she also is about 50x as wealthy as me, so I guess she's doing something right.

Doesn't make me like her any better, though.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 11

Day 11: A song from your favourite band: Wretches and Kings- Linkin Park

I don't have a favorite band, exactly. But if you're going by sheer number songs I have on my iPod, then I guess it would have to be Linkin Park, since I've been listening to them since I was a first-year in high school. This is probably my favorite song by them, from their 2010 album, A Thousand Suns. It gets me motivated, or angry. Sometimes I don't know which one it is.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 10

Day 10: A song that makes you fall asleep: Silent Night- Bing Crosby

This song is so soothing, it always makes me sleepy. That's not to say it's a boring song. It's a Christmas lullaby. Actually, when I was little and had to go to church on Christmas, we'd sing this song and I'd always struggle to stay awake. It's just that soothing of a song. But this particular version of this song always is just a lot more soothing to me than any other version. Put it on after 9:00 PM on a cold December night and I'll zonk out. But that's not to say that I don't love it- I do, it's just so relaxing I can't help but snooze.

30 Day Music Challenge: Day 9

...I'm really starting to regret starting this whole thing... it's going to take forever to finish. Oh well, 21 more days to go.

Day 09: A song that you can dance to: The Cha-Cha Slide- DJ Casper

I'm terrible at dancing. I just can't do it. I can only dance to this because they call out the steps as you dance to it.
